Meet the Makers - Portrait image of Zimbabwean Artist - Sherman Baloyi

Sherman Baloyi

I am a multidisciplinary creative based in Harare, Zimbabwe. My journey began in 2006 when I trained at the Institute of Art and Design in Bulawayo. Over the years, my work has grown to encompass graphic design, surface design, product design, and both digital and traditional art.

As a self-described creative polymath, my art reflects the environments I inhabit and the places I’ve experienced. My pieces are deeply rooted in my design background and training, drawing inspiration from constructivism and semi-abstract aesthetics. I explore African-inspired figurative art interwoven with subtle echoes of Afrofuturism, merging heritage with forward-thinking narratives.

While my figures often possess darker tones, I balance this with vibrant, expressive color palettes designed to evoke joy and optimism. To me, color is more than a visual tool—it’s a way to influence emotions, shift perspectives, and inspire positivity.

Living in a polarised society, I see art as a bridge: a means of pacifying tensions, challenging the undesirable, and fostering hope for better outcomes. Through constant experimentation and boundary-pushing, I aim to layer new dimensions onto my creative work, always expanding my horizons and telling richer, more profound stories.
