Johnson Mugabe is a self-taught collage artist from Harare, Zimbabwe, known for his vibrant and thought-provoking works that celebrate the human experience.
From his home studio, he crafts intricate pieces using plain coloured papers harvested from magazines, expertly blending them to create rich skin tones. He dresses his subjects in African print textiles, sourced from local tailor shops, adding depth and cultural significance to his subjects.
Through his art, Johnson seeks to ‘find himself in/through others’, drawing inspiration from everyday life, relatable moments, and personal values. He incorporates stencilled text to reinforce the narratives, creating visually striking and emotionally resonant pieces.
Johnson’s unique style has earned him recognition, including:
· Winner, “Most Unusual Work on Show” at the Wild Geese Art Festival 2018
· Certificate of Merit, Artists In The Stream X exhibition at Gallery Delta
· 3rd Prize, Zimbabwe Visual Art Awards 2022
Signing his work ‘nosnhoj’ (his name spelled backwards), Johnson Mugabe continues to push boundaries, exploring the intersection of identity, community, and creativity.
